U-40

On a standard U-100 insulin syringe, divide your units by 100 to convert units to ml, since 100 units equal 1 mL of liquid. So 10 units equal 0.1 mL, and 50 units equal 0.5 mL. First check the writing on your syringe barrel so you don't confuse U-100 and U-40 markings.

Units to mL on a U-100 syringe

For shots under the skin, Healthline's sizing guide names U-100 as the standard type, and its 1 mL holds 100 units. Divide the unit mark by 100, and the volume in milliliters follows: 10 units gives 0.1 mL, 25 units gives 0.25 mL and 50 units gives 0.5 mL. Read 10 units to mL for more about 0.1 mL. To line up the plunger, check the steps in reading an insulin syringe.

U-40 syringes count in a different way

Pet insulin syringes are often U-40, so 1 mL of liquid holds 40 units. Split 1 mL across 40 spaces, not 100, and you get 0.025 mL per 1 U-40 unit; 10 U-40 units then comes to 0.25 mL. Our insulin syringe sizes guide compares 0.3 mL, 0.5 mL and 1 mL barrels.

CC and units: 1 cc equals 1 mL, or 100 units

Some syringe boxes show cc, which is short for cubic centimeter, rather than mL. A cubic centimeter and 1 milliliter measure the same volume; on a U-100 barrel, 1 cc equals 1 mL and measures 100 units.

Units into cc

To change U-100 units into cc, divide by 100 just as you do for milliliters. If you draw 20 units, that's 0.2 cc of liquid; 50 units comes to 0.5 cc. Units and cc give you liquid volume only; the dose in milligrams comes from your prescriber.

Questions people ask

How many units fit in 1 cc?

On a U-100 syringe, 1 cc holds 100 units. On a U-40 pet syringe, 1 cc holds 40 units.

ML vs cc: are they the same?

Yes, both 1 mL and 1 cc measure the same liquid volume. A syringe marked 0.5 cc is the same size as one marked 0.5 mL, and it holds 50 U-100 units.

What is 0.5 mL in units?

A U-100 syringe shows 50 units at 0.5 mL. A 1 mL syringe holds twice this much, while a 0.5 mL syringe holds exactly this amount.

How much is 10 units in mL?

A U-100 barrel holds 0.1 mL of liquid at 10 units. A U-40 barrel holds 10 units in 0.25 mL.
