IU to mg calculator

Convert international units to milligrams for prescription somatropin, and learn why syringe units measure liquid volume instead.

For a medication with a fixed conversion factor, an IU to mg calculator changes international units into milligrams. The IU is an international unit that measures a drug's strength in the body rather than weight or liquid volume. Every medicine works differently, so we convert IU to mg only when a drug has an official factor; your prescriber decides how much to take.

How does the IU to mg calculator work for somatropin?

The FDA has approved prescription human growth hormone, called somatropin, under brand names such as Omnitrope, Humatrope and Norditropin, among others. Our conversion uses 3 IU for every 1 mg of somatropin, which is the factor listed on the Omnitrope label.

Divide the IU amount by 3 to get milligrams. A dose of 6 IU works out to 2 mg of somatropin, and 1 IU comes to about 0.333 mg; how many units you pull on your syringe depends on the liquid strength in your vial.

Most substances lack a fixed IU to mg factor

Drugs differ in biological activity, so one number won't cover most medicines. Vials of prescription hCG use USP units, for example. On the Novarel label, 5,000 or 10,000 units appear without any matching milligram amount.

Look at your medication box to find out if IU, mg or mcg appear on your vial's label. When your vial label lists weight rather than activity, use our mg to mcg converter to change milligrams into micrograms, or the reverse. A milligram divides into one thousand micrograms.

IU and syringe units are different

The number marks along an insulin syringe barrel are often confused with international units. A U-100 syringe holds 100 units in 1 mL, and its syringe units measure only liquid volume.

Every 1-unit mark on that barrel means 0.01 mL of liquid, whatever medicine is dissolved inside. To check liquid volume, use our units to mL tool or the units to mg calculator with the strength of your vial.

Questions people often ask

How much is 10 IU of HGH in mg?

For prescription somatropin, dividing 10 IU by 3 yields 3.33 mg. Working in the other direction, multiplying milligrams by 3 shows that 5 mg of somatropin comes to 15 IU.

Does 1 IU match 1 unit on a syringe?

No. These stand for 2 different measurements. An IU shows how active a drug is, but a mark for 1 unit on a U-100 syringe always equals 0.01 mL of liquid. The values match only if 1 mL of your mixed vial contains 100 IU.

Is converting hCG IU to mg possible?

No. There is no milligram conversion factor for hCG vials. To measure hCG in units per mL, divide the units stated on the vial label by the amount of water you add, in mL. A label total of 5,000 or 10,000 units is used in the same way.
