How to store peptides

Dry vials, mixed vials and prefilled pens have temperature ranges, refrigerator rules and room temperature day limits listed in FDA drug labels.

Your medicine’s form matters for how to store peptides: dry powder, mixed liquid and prefilled pens each have their own requirements. On their labels, FDA-approved drugs give exact temperature ranges and day limits; research vials without approval come only with vendor instructions, and those instructions differ. We explained the official label rules to help you keep your vials at the right temperature.

Storing lyophilized peptides before mixing

When medicine is freeze-dried into a dry powder cake, no liquid has been added yet; the process is lyophilization. Medicines that are FDA-approved and supplied as dry powder require you to follow the carton temperature range. The Egrifta SV label gives one example: store the unmixed 2 mg vial at a room temperature of 68 to 77 F and leave it in its box to protect it from light.

None of these research peptides, including retatrutide, ipamorelin, BPC-157, TB-500 and CJC-1295, is FDA-approved for any use in people. Research chemicals sold without an FDA label follow storage rules set by each vendor, which differ among shops; consider this before following steps on reconstituting peptides.

How long does a reconstituted peptide last in the fridge?

Once liquid has been added to dry powder, the medicine is reconstituted and can be drawn into a syringe. Every medicine has its own stability testing, so no single fridge timeline covers all mixed vials. After mixing the powder with bacteriostatic water solution that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, follow the Novarel DailyMed label, which requires refrigerator storage and use within 30 days.

Zepbound and Mounjaro labels require disposal of an opened multi-dose vial or KwikPen after 30 days from the 1st use, 30 days at room temperature or 4 weekly doses. A separate timeline applies to your source bottle. Our bacteriostatic water duration guide covers the CDC's 28-day rule.

Is refrigeration needed for peptides?

Most prefilled GLP-1 pens and most single-dose vials need refrigeration between 36 and 46 F (2 to 8 C). FDA labels permit set room temperature periods when needed.

Single-dose pens and vials need refrigerator storage at 36 to 46 F, according to the Zepbound DailyMed label and the Mounjaro label. Each may remain unrefrigerated at up to 86 F, and if needed, for up to 21 days.

The Wegovy DailyMed label says to refrigerate single-dose pens within the 36 to 46 F range. They may also remain at 46 to 86 F for up to 28 days with the cap left on. For Ozempic, unused pens belong at 36 to 46 F in the refrigerator. Following your 1st dose, you may keep the pen in a refrigerator or at 59 to 86 F for up to 56 days.

A refrigerator or mini fridge for peptides

Your vials don't require a special cosmetic cooler or mini fridge for storage. The important factor is the steady 36 to 46 F range shown on drug labels.

Cold spots near the back plate fall below freezing in many tiny desktop coolers. You must not freeze Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic, as their labels state. An inexpensive fridge thermometer placed on a middle shelf of your kitchen refrigerator helps you check the temperature; keep the box clear of the freezer vent.

Rules for how to store peptides and travel with peptides

For your trip, see whether it falls within the room temperature window shown in the label for your medicine For single-dose Zepbound, the allowed time is 21 days at temperatures up to 86 F; for Wegovy, it's 28 days. Plan ahead: if you expect heat above 86 F or to be away past the room temperature limit, pack your vials with a cool pack in an insulated travel case.

Any frozen ice pack should have a cloth or other barrier between it and the medicine carton so the liquid doesn't freeze. During your trip, keep the vials or pens in their original box to shield them from light.

Questions people often ask

How long can peptides remain usable?

FDA-approved vials and pens that remain unopened last until the carton expiration date when stored at the label temperature. Limits after opening or at room temperature differ by product: 21 days unrefrigerated for the single-dose form of Zepbound, 28 days for Wegovy, 30 days refrigerated for mixed Novarel, and Ozempic gets 56 days after 1st use.

Is freezing peptides allowed?

No. FDA labels for Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic each warn against freezing the vials or pens. Since unapproved research peptides lack an FDA label, you must use the vendor's storage sheet.

Is light something peptides need protection from?

Yes, each official label for Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Egrifta SV directs you to store the medicine in its original carton for protection from light
