mg to mL calculator
To turn a dose measured in milligrams into milliliters of liquid, use the milligrams per milliliter concentration of your mixed vial.
This is for reference only. Your dose comes from your prescriber or the product label; we just convert it to units here.
- on a U-100 syringe, in 1 unit
- 0.01 mL
- contained in 100 units
- 1 mL
- units in a syringe of 0.3 / 0.5 / 1 mL
- 30 / 50 / 100
Using your vial strength, a convert mg to ml calculator changes milligrams of dose weight into milliliters of liquid. Milligrams tell you dry powder weight, milliliters tell you liquid volume, so the 2 numbers only connect through the mg per mL concentration. Your prescriber makes the dosing decisions; once you know your strength, we do the liquid math.
How to convert mg to mL using your vial strength
Any convert mg to ml calculator divides the dose in mg by the mixed vial strength in mg per mL. On their own, milligrams cannot become milliliters, because the volume changes depending on how much bacteriostatic water goes into the vial. The Mounjaro dosing label sets 2.5 mg as the starting dose; apply it with a vial strength of 5 mg per mL. Take 2.5 mg and divide by a strength of 5 mg per mL, and you get 0.5 mL. A U-100 syringe marks 100 units per 1 mL, so that amount reads 50 units.
Milliliter to milligram converter: working in reverse
A milliliter to milligram converter works in reverse: multiply the mL of liquid by the mg per mL strength of your vial. If your vial has 10 mg per mL, drawing 0.2 mL gives you 2 mg of peptide. To see each step, open our dosage calculator formula page, or switch to mL first using units to mL.
Common strengths for converting 1 mL to milligrams
When a U-100 syringe is filled with 1 mL of liquid, it reaches the 100-unit mark, and the milligrams it holds match your concentration number.
| Strength of the mix | 1 mL holds | 1 mg is | 1 mg on a U-100 syringe |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 mg/mL | 2 mg | 0.5 mL | 50 units |
| 2.5 mg/mL | 2.5 mg | 0.4 mL | 40 units |
| 5 mg/mL | 5 mg | 0.2 mL | 20 units |
| 10 mg/mL | 10 mg | 0.1 mL | 10 units |
When you mix a new vial, our peptide reconstitution calculator works out the mg per mL.
Questions people often ask
What volume does 1 mg equal in mL?
That depends on the strength of your mix. The amount of liquid for 1 mg changes with the strength. With 2 mg per mL, 1 mg equals 0.5 mL, or 50 units. With 5 mg per mL, it equals 0.2 mL, or 20 units. With 10 mg per mL, it equals 0.1 mL, or 10 units.
Is it possible to convert mg to mL without knowing the strength?
No. Milligrams give you dry weight, while milliliters give you liquid volume. Find the mg per mL concentration on your pharmacy label. Another way is to divide the total mg in the vial by the amount of water added, in mL.
What does 0.5 mL equal in units?
A U-100 insulin syringe holds 50 units in 0.5 mL. To get U-100 units, multiply any mL volume by 100.
